Matthew 6:31-33 says “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Fifty years ago my grandfather fell off a building and broke almost every bone in his body, including his neck, both wrists, his legs, ribs, toes, and his teeth. His company had been hired to do some repair work on the roof and an unexpected gust of wind carried him over the side. Miraculously—and I mean miraculously—he survived, but as you can imagine he was laid up for quite awhile. In those days there was less of a social safety-net and his only income after the accident was $25 a week from the state. It was a far cry from the $150 per week that he normally made and not exactly enough to take care of a wife, four kids and a mailbox full of medical bills.
His father, my great grandfather, told him he needed to cut every expense possible, including his giving at church. My grandfather refused, saying that if the widow mentioned in the Bible could give from her poverty then he could too. He knew the amounts didn’t matter to God, but he wanted to be faithful regardless of his circumstances.
A few days later, a group of his co-workers came in to visit. After some small talk, one of them stepped forward and said that each of the men had instructed the company to withdraw certain amounts from their paychecks to give to my grandfather. It wasn’t quite full pay, but the company was so impressed that they agreed to make up the difference.
God knew exactly what my grandfather had need of and he knew exactly how he was going to provide it. He knows what you and I have need of as well. Rather than worrying if God will uphold his end of the bargain, our job is to seek him first and trust that he will be faithful.
